Make a contrast clear

Back to exercises

Step 1 of 3

Read it slowly

Say the whole passage at a pace that lets you hear every word. Notice one part to repeat.

The first draft describes every feature of the project, but it never says what the team needs to decide. The next version will begin with that decision. We will explain the main reason, give one example and leave the supporting details in a separate note. This does not mean the details are unimportant. It means a listener needs a route through them. After reading the opening, someone should be able to tell us what choice is being proposed and why it matters.

Pause between the problem and the proposed change.

How to practise

Check your next reading

Read the passage again. Was the detail in the focus note easier to catch? Keep or revise your change.

How to rehearse this passage

  1. Read it slowly

Say the whole passage at a pace that lets you hear every word. Notice one part to repeat.

  2. Read it at your speaking pace

Repeat the difficult part, then read the complete passage at a comfortable pace. Choose clarity before speed.

  3. Listen for the detail you chose

Read the passage again. Was the detail in the focus note easier to catch? Keep or revise your change.

Read aloud or use a recorder you already know. The timer guides your practice; it does not assess your voice. Completion lasts while this page stays open.
